Mali, West Africa, is a colorful and vibrant land home to important ancient West African
kingdoms, diverse ethnic groups, the Saharan desert and its famed medieval center of
trade and scholarship, Timbuktu, and countless other points of interest. A former French
colony which gained independence in 1960, Mali has established itself as one of the
most significant and rich music centers in the world.
The Mande Sessions is a cinema-verite, documentary film. It will be composed of footage of the recording sessions for Athens, Georgia singer/songwriter Adam Klein's "The Mande Sessions" music album in Bamako, Mali, in early 2010. The record, performed and sung by Klein in the Bambara language, will feature acoustic guitar, kora (harp), ngoni (loot), balafon (xylophone), calabash, tamani (talking drum), djembe and other traditional drums, electric guitar, bass, and more. The ten song collection was composed by Klein and comprises his first album of Malian music.
